ODInteriors was contracted by Biocompatibles UK (BTG) on a Design & Build basis to fit out their new laboratory facility.

This included:

  • Wet Chemistry Laboratories
  • Dry Laboratories
  • Microscopy Laboratories

    • The project was in BTG’s new headquarters building in Camberley which had recently been part fitted out by ODInteriors.

As the building was constructed as office space, there was a significant change of use and impact on the building services infrastructure. The draw on incoming services for a lab are almost double that of a normal office space.This has a dramatic effect on plant area needs but also subtler areas such as risers and ceiling and floor voids. By involving a Laboratory services consultant at an early stage, our designers were armed with the limitations of the space and designed a robust services strategy with these in mind.

The existing traditional 4 pipe fan coil system that served the office space was removed and bespoke systems were designed for the labs. This meant there was the need for a significant plant area external to the building to be created and planning applied for accordingly.

This housed the following:
New Atex rated AHU’s
Packaged wet plant enclosure
Compressed air enclosure
Chillers
Medical Gas enclosure

In additional to this, the services scope included:
Specialist Medical gas
Helium gas supplies
Nitrogen gas supplies
CO2 and O2 air systems
Full upgrade to electrical incoming systems
Fume cupboards

As well as the technical challenges inherent with a specialist fit out of this kind, one of the key drivers in the brief was to create a series of functioning laboratories that could be comfortably and safely viewed by lisiting clients without any interference to the technicians or experiments.

Training and viewing areas are situated immediately adjacent to the larger laboratories and offer panoramic views into the working laboratories, providing a true sense of immersion for trainees and guests.

ODInteriors has also proceeded with another exciting project at Biocompatible’s HQ based on the successful management and execution of this phase.
